Preparing for Finals with ADD/ADHD and Executive Functioning Concerns

It is never too early or too late to prepare for finals. Since learners with ADD, ADHD and Executive Functioning concerns have issues preparing for big academic challenges, I cannot stress enough to my clients that getting a head start on finals should have begun already.

This is not a sprint to the finish, but a marathon being run throughout the semester. Well what exactly does that mean? Preparations should be ongoing on information and valuable tools should have been gathered up already. Students should have saved tests, quizzes, study guides and other tools throughout the year. These should be regularly reviewed and put in a safe place.

The frantic phone call season is upon me. Parents want me to help the child perform better on finals. Recently, I had a mother tell me that she wanted her child pull his grades up by at least one letter grade. I always tell perspective clients I will never promise better grades but provide strategies on how to improve performance. Any professional that tells you they’ll improve grades isn’t serving you well. Improving performance can result in better grades. It’s more important to teach a client how to fish, and not promise a certain number of fish. The effort and strategies are ultimately up to the client.
