New Year’s Resolutions with ADD and ADHD

Welcome to the New Year! It is a wonderful time allowing all of us to start with a clean slate and work on personal improvements. Despite this excellent opportunity, these new commitments seem to fade away as the year grows older. For individuals with ADD and ADHD, this process can get a bit more complicated.

OK, I am not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but offer some quick suggestions for self-improvement. It starts with being realistic. Losing large amounts of weight or quitting a bad habit cold turkey is a path to not meeting goals. Again, don’t take this as discouragement but as some helpful advice. Think of it this way, it’s like trying to eat a whole steak (goal) without a fork and knife (plan of action). You need the fork and knife to help you cut the steak into smaller and more manageable pieces. Swallowing a whole steak is impossible and if you try to use your hands, it will burn. But using a fork and knife is almost necessary in eating a steak.

I wish you the best of luck and take things slow. Even meeting a short-term goal is an accomplishment. Don’t get discouraged just because things don’t go exactly as planned.
